About Popsicle Pier
How we teach
We teach children to swim by teaching courage first: small classes, adult instructors, and no child ever forced into the water.

Where every lesson starts
Every lesson starts from one rule: when a child says stop, we stop. No child is forced, rushed, or put under the water. Hurt means stop, always, and we never tell a child "that doesn't hurt." A child who freezes is never pushed; we stop and check in with them. A parent is beside every child.
It's okay to be scared; being scared can protect you. But the same feeling shows up for hard and for hurt, so we ask one question: "Hard or hurt?" Hard means scary, and I can try. Hurt means stop. Your child makes the call. We do scary hard. We never do scary hurt.
A child who does not want to enter the water is not put in the water. Your child's coach waits until they're ready, then asks for one small try, and the next lesson builds on it. You're beside your child the whole time.
Not yet is an answer we respect
A child can always say not yet, and coming back to try later counts. We're raising kids who trust their own judgment, even when it's inconvenient for us, and even when they're wrong: it's still their judgment. Every child learns on the first lesson that their stop works on any adult, us included.
Our thinking on attachment and authenticity draws on the work of Dr. Gabor Maté.
What we will do
Teach your child to swim, with one coach and one or two children in the water (three in a Madison small group, by request). Keep you close by your child, every lesson: at the edge of the pool, or in the water with them if they are under 3. Tell you where your child is and what comes next. Stop when your child says stop. Tell you the truth about how each lesson went. We talk about layers of protection, and we'll tell you when we don't know.
Our purpose
At Popsicle Pier, we believe every child should learn to swim and truly enjoy the experience. Our goal is to help students master the water with confidence through nurturing instruction rather than strict drills.
Many of our swimmers arrive afraid of the water. We never force or rush a child, or put a child under the water.
Small groups, individual attention
We keep it to two students per coach; a group of three is available by special request. Most lessons are semi-private, pairing two children based on age and ability, for more swim time, built-in rest, and the chance to watch a peer take on a challenge.
In Buckhead, every lesson is one or two children.
Tailored to your child
We meet your child where they are and build from their level. Whether they're new to swimming or refining their technique, their journey is uniquely theirs.
Long-term, year-round commitment
We offer weekly lessons, all year long.
The Brave Equation
We embrace a simple philosophy: a little scared + a little try = brave. Every lesson provides an opportunity to tackle something that felt challenging just a week prior. That's the essence of our approach.
